Noccalula Falls Park

Noccalula Falls Park is located in Gadsden, Alabama. It is just two miles from the city center and has a backstory that is as tragic as it is romantic. Legend has it, the Cherokee Indian Princess Noccalula was the daughter of a rich and powerful chief that fell in love with a Brave from her own Tribe. Her wish to marry the brave young warrior went unfulfilled when a Creek Indian Chief offered more bounty for her to marry his son. Her lover was banished and on her wedding day, Noccalula slipped away during the ceremony. Noccalula ventured through the woods and stood at the falls. She decided she would rather jump off and end her life on the rocks below the falls than to be subjected to a loveless marriage. Today, you can camp and stroll through the park’s paved trails. Each year, there is a reenactment of the legend of Noccalula at the falls. There is also a petting zoo and a Pioneer Village in the park where you can learn about the history of the park and area.
